My Father’s Business

And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” Luke 2:49

It wasn’t personal. I’m sure He loved His earthly parents very much. Jesus was not trying to make His parents anxious. He wasn’t trying to hurt them or do anything to them. He wasn’t acting out of rebellion or trying to stick it to them as a defiant teenager. He was simply “about His Father’s business.” He wasn’t even trying to pursue His own agenda. Jesus was doing the will of the Father.

Jesus was drawn to the temple. He was involved in important conversation. God was preparing Him for His purpose and plan.

We aren’t Jesus. We are, however, called to a purpose and plan. The great commission is both general and specific. Sometimes God places a purpose in our hearts that can’t be ignored. It starts out as His desire. We may even question it and want to run from it.  Then somewhere along the way He ignites a fire of excitement that causes us to say… “Did you not know that I must be about my Father’s business?” It’s an unexplainable yearning and desire to be in the presence of the King and feeling a certain familiar comfort knowing you’re centered in His will.

The most important thing is to do the will of the Father. What has been placed in you? We must be about our Father’s business… even when people don’t understand. I want to be doing the will of the Father. I want to live out His purpose and plan that has now become my own.

How will you devote2day?

His parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. And when He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast. When they had finished the days, as they returned, the Boy Jesus lingered behind in Jerusalem. And [l]Joseph and His mother did not know it; but supposing Him to have been in the company, they went a day’s journey, and sought Him among their relatives and acquaintances.  So when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking Him. Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers. So when they saw Him, they were amazed; and His mother said to Him, “Son, why have You done this to us? Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously.”

And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” Luke 2:41- 49
